Ferretti tra due mondi: eredità italiana o finanza cinese?

Il Gruppo Ferretti resta italiano nei cantieri, nei brand e in gran parte delle sue competenze, ma il suo centro di gravità si è spostato: da un’impresa italiana con capitale cinese e un AD italiano nato e cresciuto nel mondo del lusso nautico, si passa a un’impresa italiana con capitale e governance sempre più cinesi, un AD con passaporto svizzero e svedese e un management che parla sempre più la lingua della finanza globale che del cantiere.

Fino a ieri Ferretti era un caso quasi emblematico di “italianità industriale” tutelata da un azionista estero: Weichai/SHIG forniva risorse e visione industriale, ma la direzione strategica restava in mano a un profilo come Alberto Galassi, radicato nel sistema cantieristico, capace di muoversi tra mostre, cantieri e relazioni globali con lo stile di un imprenditore‑ambasciatore del made in Italy. Oggi, con la vittoria definitiva della lista dell’azionista cinese nell’assemblea e la nomina di Stassi Anastassov a CEO, il quadro cambia: la presidenza passa a Tan Ning, già direttore esecutivo, mentre Anastassov – manager internazionale con background in grandi multinazionali del consumo come Procter & Gamble e Duracell e un’esperienza da dirigente in gruppi finanziari ed industriali cinesi – porta in Ferretti un linguaggio diverso, più orientato a KPI, efficienza, integrazione con l’azionista e ottimizzazione del debito che a storie di mare.

Nulla cambia, almeno in apparenza, nel DNA dei brand: Riva, Ferretti Yachts, Custom Line, Pershing, Wally, CRN e Itama restano marchi italiani, creati e costruiti in Italia, con un’identità che il mercato globale del lusso continua a riconoscere. Ma la prospettiva che li governa si fa più distante, meno “artigianale‑familiare” e più “corporate‑industriale”. Il cantiere resta in Italia, ma la bussola decisionale è sempre più tarata sui ritorni, sui flussi di cassa, sulla governance e sulla coerenza con un gruppo industriale cinese che vede Ferretti non solo come icona del lusso nautico, ma come asset strategico inserito in un più ampio portafoglio industriale e finanziario.

In questo quadro nasce inevitabile una domanda: stiamo assistendo a una cessione dello spirito italiano o a una sua convivenza forzata con una logica più “finanziaria”? Probabilmente a entrambe le cose. Il gruppo mantiene il suo cuore produttivo in Italia, ma il cervello è sempre più orientato verso Pechino, Hong Kong e ai centri decisionali internazionali, con un AD che, più che da ex capitano di yachts, parla da ex dirigente di grandi corporation globali. Il lusso nautico resta, ma il modo di gestirlo si avvicina a quello tipico dell’industria finanziarizzata: performance, metriche, integrazione, efficienza.

Per Yacht Lounge, Ferretti resta un simbolo del design e della capacità industriale italiana, ma è anche un esempio paradigmatico di come il mondo del lusso, e del megayacht in particolare, sia ormai attraversato da un’onda lunga di finanza globale, capitale cinese e management internazionale. L’Italia continua a costruire il sogno, ma a leggerne il bilancio e a decidere il futuro è sempre più un altro alfabeto.

Early March 2026. If we were to take a snapshot of the current state of the global yachting market, the image would look starkly different from just a few years ago. The glamour of the docks is yielding to the surgical precision of spreadsheets in New York and London. This isn’t merely a change in ownership; it’s a paradigm shift redrawing the lines between the nautical industry and high finance.

The Return of Western Capital The news shaking the industry this week is the change of hands for a “Made in the UK” icon: Sunseeker International. After over a decade under the umbrella of Chinese conglomerate Dalian Wanda, the Poole-based shipyard is officially back in the Western orbit. The acquisition by a consortium led by New York’s Kelso Capital Partners (KCP), in partnership with Lionheart Capital, marks a definitive “re-shoring” of capital.

This move inevitably begs the question: What lies ahead for other giants under Asian control? Now that Sunseeker has moved back West, all eyes are on Ferretti Group. Despite the stability shown thus far by China’s Weichai, the dual listing in Milan and Hong Kong—combined with recent overtures from Western private equity—suggests that the center of gravity for major yachting players is shifting toward U.S. and European financial markets.

Il glamour delle banchine sta lasciando spazio a una nuova, necessaria era: quella del rigore finanziario.

Il Ritorno del Capitale USA La notizia che apre il mese è il passaggio di Sunseeker International nelle mani degli americani di Kelso Capital Partners (KCP). Dopo anni di gestione cinese, il ritorno in orbita occidentale segna un cambio di paradigma. Non è solo un cambio di bandiera, ma di metodo: la nomina di Andrés Rubio (ex CEO di Intrum e uomo di pura finanza) a nuovo CEO permanente, affiancato da un veterano come Antony Sheriff, chiarisce che la priorità oggi è la trasformazione industriale e l’efficienza millimetrica.

The Miami Boat Show wrapped up just a few days ago, and as always, it offered more than new models and glossy decks. Miami is a barometer — not of the weather, but of the mood.

Because in yachting, the real climate isn’t measured in degrees or knots. It’s measured in confidence, hesitation, appetite, and timing.

And this year, the message was unmistakable: megayachts are cruising ahead with no signs of slowing, while everything under 30 meters is feeling a softer breeze.

Not a crisis. Not a downturn. Just that subtle shift when the market doesn’t stop — it simply pauses to look at the horizon.

Why We Look at Rates and Recession (And Why We’re Not Analysts)

We’re not here to forecast the economy or pretend to be financial analysts. That’s not our world, and it’s not our ambition.

But we live inside this industry. We talk to shipyards, brokers, designers, owners. We feel the market the way you feel the roll of a boat — instinctively, before the numbers arrive.

That’s why we look at two prediction markets: not to predict the future, but to understand the atmosphere in which yachting will move over the next months.

So we’ve included two live indicators — one on interest rates, one on recession — not to “explain” the market, but to frame the mood behind it.

1. Interest Rates — A Wind That Doesn’t Blow the Same for Everyone

The prediction markets on interest rates show a world moving out of sync: some regions hesitate, others stay cautious, others seem ready to move.

For megayachts, this barely matters. Someone signing for a 50- or 60-meter yacht isn’t waiting for a rate cut.

For the rest of the market, it matters a lot. The cost of money is like wind on the bow — it doesn’t stop you, but it slows you down. And below 30 meters, that slowdown is visible.

2. Recession — The Ultra-Rich Keep Buying, Everyone Else Watches the Sky

Prediction markets assign moderate odds to a recession. Not enough to trigger fear, but enough to create caution.

And Miami reflected exactly that:

• megayachts were vibrant, confident, and very much alive

• the sub-30m segment felt more contemplative — not withdrawing, just waiting

It’s the classic “let’s see how things go,” which in yachting can be as powerful as any economic indicator.

Il Segnale di Miami: i Megayacht Avanzano, Tutti gli Altri si Fermano.

Il Salone di Miami si è chiuso da poco, e come sempre ha raccontato più di quanto mostrasse. Non è solo un salone: è un barometro. Un luogo dove capisci subito se il vento del mercato soffia a favore o contro.

E quest’anno il messaggio era limpido: i megayacht continuano a navigare spediti, mentre sotto i 30 metri si sente un’aria più prudente.

Non è crisi, non è paura. È quel momento in cui il mercato non si ferma, ma rallenta per guardare l’orizzonte.

Perché guardiamo tassi e recessione (e perché non siamo analisti)

Noi non facciamo analisi finanziarie. Non è il nostro mestiere e non vogliamo trasformare Yacht Lounge in un report trimestrale.

Però viviamo immersi in questo mondo. E quando il mercato cambia ritmo, lo percepiamo come si percepisce il rollio di una barca: non serve un grafico per capire che qualcosa si sta muovendo.

Per questo guardiamo due prediction market: non per prevedere il futuro, ma per capire l’atmosfera in cui si muoverà la nautica nei prossimi mesi.

1. Interest Rates — Il vento che non soffia uguale per tutti

I prediction market sui tassi mostrano un mondo che procede in ordine sparso: il Giappone tentenna, la Cina è prudente, l’India aspetta, il Sudafrica è quasi certo della sua prossima mossa.

Per i megayacht, questo cambia poco: chi firma per un 50 o 60 metri non aspetta il taglio dei tassi.

Per il resto del mercato, invece, sì. Il costo del denaro è come il vento in prua: non ti ferma, ma ti fa rallentare. E sotto i 30 metri, questo rallentamento si sente.

2. Recession — I super-ricchi continuano a comprare, gli altri osservano

Il mercato assegna probabilità moderate a una recessione. Non abbastanza per far paura, abbastanza per far riflettere.

E questo si vede a Miami:

• i megayacht brillano, le firme arrivano, i cantieri sorridono

• sotto i 30 metri, invece, si percepisce uno stallo gentile: non rinuncia, ma attesa

È il classico “vediamo come va”, che nel mondo della nautica pesa più di mille analisi.

Un mercato a due velocità

Il Salone di Miami ci ha ricordato una cosa semplice: il lusso estremo non conosce incertezza, il resto del mercato sì.

Il segmento dei megayacht è sempre stato un mondo a parte.

There is an iconic scene in Pretty Woman where Edward Lewis, the character played by Richard Gere, explains his job to Julia Roberts with disarming cynicism: “I buy companies that are in financial trouble and I break them up.” In technical terms, it’s called corporate raiding, but the bottom line is simple: often the sum of the individual parts, sold separately, is worth much more than the whole company. This is exactly the script that seems to have played out last week on the docks of Wall Street, with MarineMax as the unwitting protagonist.

The news shaking the market is the all-cash offer put forward by the activist fund Donerail Group to acquire control of the American giant. But why would an investment fund put over a billion dollars on the table for a company that sells boats, right when the “new” market is physiologically catching its breath? The answer is that the investors likely couldn’t care less about the boats themselves.

For years, the market has viewed MarineMax as the world’s largest “dealer”—a business built on inventory full of hulls (Azimut, Sea Ray, Galeon) and margins tied to retail sales. It is a cyclical and risky business. But in recent years, flying under the radar, the group has shed its skin, transforming into a luxury holding company. It bought brokerage giants like Fraser Yachts and Northrop & Johnson and, crucially, acquired IGY Marinas, locking in a collection of exclusive marinas from the Caribbean to the Mediterranean.

As we previously noted in our analysis of the Burgess deal, the MarineMax case confirms a new financial dogma: capital is no longer chasing builders, but rather those who manage the owner relationship. If yachting is the new hunting ground for private equity, services are the ultimate prize.👇

This is where the Richard Gere logic kicks in. The “wolves” of finance have done the math: today, the stock market values MarineMax as a retail dealer, keeping the share price low. But if you look inside the belly of the beast, you find precious assets. IGY’s ports are essentially “real estate on the water”: they generate constant rent and never go out of style. Superyacht brokerage commissions guarantee premium cash flows without the industrial risk of a shipyard. The hypothesis circulating among analysts is that of a classic “breakup”: acquire the company to separate the jewels (marinas and services) from the heavier operational side (boat sales), realizing an immediate profit from the valuation of the individual pieces.

This move is the definitive confirmation of a trend we had already observed with the interest surrounding Burgess and other major brokerage houses. Smart money understands that in yachting today, the real money is made with high-value-added services. Boats age, models change, but experience management and port infrastructure remain secure annuities. The assault on MarineMax is a sign of maturity for the entire sector: yachting has grown up, and as in all attractive industries, the sharks have arrived, ready to bet that the whole is worth less than the sum of its parts.

La sindrome di “Pretty Woman”.

C’è una scena iconica in Pretty Woman in cui Edward Lewis, il personaggio interpretato da Richard Gere, spiega a Julia Roberts il suo lavoro con un cinismo disarmante: «Compro compagnie che hanno difficoltà finanziarie e le smembro». In termini tecnici si chiama corporate raiding, ma la sostanza è semplice: spesso la somma delle singole parti, vendute separatamente, vale molto di più dell’azienda intera. È esattamente la sceneggiatura che sembra essere andata in onda la settimana scorsa sulle banchine di Wall Street, e il protagonista involontario è MarineMax.

La notizia che ha scosso il mercato è l’offerta all-cash avanzata dal fondo attivista Donerail Group per acquisire il controllo del colosso americano. Ma perché un fondo d’investimento dovrebbe mettere sul piatto oltre un miliardo di dollari per un’azienda che vende barche, proprio in una fase in cui il mercato del “nuovo” sta fisiologicamente rifiatando? La risposta è che agli investitori, probabilmente, delle barche importa poco.

Per anni il mercato ha guardato a MarineMax come al più grande “concessionario” del mondo, un business fatto di magazzini pieni di scafi (Azimut, Sea Ray, Galeon) e margini legati alla vendita al dettaglio. Un’attività ciclica e rischiosa. Ma negli ultimi anni, sotto traccia, il gruppo ha cambiato pelle trasformandosi in una holding del lusso: ha comprato giganti del brokerage come Fraser Yachts e Northrop & Johnson e, soprattutto, ha acquisito IGY Marinas, mettendo in cassaforte una collezione di porti turistici esclusivi dai Caraibi al Mediterraneo.

Qui scatta la logica alla Richard Gere. I “lupi” della finanza hanno fatto i conti: oggi la Borsa valuta MarineMax come un rivenditore retail, tenendo il prezzo delle azioni basso. Ma se si guarda nella pancia del gruppo, si trovano asset preziosissimi. I porti di IGY sono “immobiliare sull’acqua”: generano affitti costanti e non passano di moda. Le commissioni di brokerage sui superyacht garantiscono flussi di cassa pregiati senza il rischio industriale del cantiere. L’ipotesi che circola tra gli analisti è quella del classico “spezzatino”: acquisire l’azienda per separare i gioielli (marine e servizi) dalla parte più pesante (la vendita di barche), realizzando un profitto immediato dalla valorizzazione dei singoli pezzi.

L’assalto a MarineMax è un segnale di maturità per tutto il settore: la nautica è diventata adulta e, come in tutte le industrie appetibili, sono arrivati gli squali, pronti a scommettere che il tutto valga meno della somma delle parti.

The good news is that almost all managers agree in identifying Hard Luxury (jewelry, watches) and Experiential Luxury (yachting, hospitality) as the true winners of 2026. While the sale of mid-range accessories slows down, the UHNWI clientele continues to invest in “living” luxury rather than just “wearing” it. This is an indirect but powerful confirmation of the solidity of the yachting business model, which positions itself exactly at the top of that “K,” sheltered from the volatility currently hitting fast fashion and mass consumer goods.

Se il biennio appena trascorso è stato definito dagli addetti ai lavori come il momento della “normalizzazione” post-pandemica, questo inizio di 2026 si apre sui mercati finanziari all’insegna di una parola d’ordine ben diversa: selettività. Osservando i report pubblicati in queste prime settimane dell’anno dalle principali banche d’affari, appare evidente come il comparto del lusso non si muova più come un monolite. È finita l’epoca in cui “tutto saliva”: oggi gli analisti descrivono uno scenario a forma di “K”, dove le strade dei vari brand si separano nettamente. Da una parte c’è chi continua a crescere, spinto da un consumatore ultra-alto spendente che non conosce crisi; dall’altra c’è chi soffre, penalizzato dal rallentamento della clientela aspirazionale, ancora schiacciata dall’inflazione e dall’incertezza economica.

Mettendo a confronto le previsioni dei grandi gestori per l’anno in corso, emerge un quadro estremamente chiaro che interessa da vicino anche il nostro settore. Per Bain & Company e Altagamma, dopo un 2025 sostanzialmente piatto, il 2026 vedrà un rimbalzo tecnico moderato, trainato non più dall’aumento dei listini ma dal ritorno dei volumi in aree chiave come Cina e Stati Uniti, con una predilezione netta per il “lusso esperienziale”. Una visione condivisa da J.P. This interest is not accidental. It signals that, in the eyes of institutional investors, yachting has ceased to be a volatile, cyclical niche and has become an industry with solid fundamentals, recurring cash flows, and significant margins for efficiency.

The Service Pivot: The Burgess and Ancient Case

The most recent and emblematic example occurred just days ago (November 17, 2025): the entry of the American investment firm Ancient into the capital of Burgess, a global leader in superyacht brokerage. Unlike industrial acquisitions, the target here is not production capacity, but the relationship with the UHNWI client. Ancient invested in Burgess, recognizing it as a “category-defining” platform: a 360° service hub (brokerage, charter, crew management) capable of generating scalable, recurring revenue. The declared goal is to equip Burgess with patient capital to invest in technology and consolidate global leadership, while maintaining the independence of the historical management.

The Industrial Turnaround: The Princess Yachts Case

In the builder segment, the fund strategy is different: enter, restructure, and scale. The acquisition of Princess Yachtsby KPS Capital Partners (2023) is proof of this. The 2024 results confirm the merit of the operation: despite supply chain challenges, Princess recorded a turnover of £378.1 million, a clear increase compared to the £310.5 million of 2023. Nonostante il mercato del lusso globale stia attraversando nel 2025 una fase di “normalizzazione”, caratterizzata da una domanda più selettiva, il settore della nautica continua a rappresentare un target privilegiato per i fondi di Private Equity (PE).

Questo interesse non è casuale. Segnala che, agli occhi degli investitori istituzionali, lo yachting ha smesso di essere una nicchia ciclica e volatile per diventare un’industria con fondamentali solidi, flussi di cassa ricorrenti e margini di efficientamento.

La Svolta nei Servizi: Il Caso Burgess e Ancient

L’esempio più recente ed emblematico è di pochi giorni fa (17 novembre 2025): l’ingresso della società di investimento americana Ancient nel capitale di Burgess, leader globale nel brokeraggio di superyacht. A differenza delle acquisizioni industriali, qui il target non è la capacità produttiva, ma la relazione con il cliente UHNWI. Ancient ha investito in Burgess riconoscendola come una piattaforma “category-defining”: un hub di servizi a 360° (compravendita, charter, gestione equipaggi) capace di generare ricavi ricorrenti e scalabili. Fino a ieri, il mondo dello yachting era raccontato principalmente attraverso il design, la tecnologia e le rotte esclusive. Ma ignorare la dimensione finanziaria di questo settore significa ignorare una parte fondamentale della sua realtà.
