There are people who adapt to the world. And there are people who ask the world to adapt to them.
Joe Lewis belongs to the second category. When the British billionaire, Tottenham shareholder, permanent resident aboard his own yacht, a man who uses the sea the way others use an office, commissioned a new vessel from the German shipyard Abeking & Rasmussen, the brief was of a disarming simplicity: build me a boat around a padel court.
Not: add me a padel court. Around.
The shipyard took thirty-three months. The result was Aviva: 98 metres, launched in 2017, the first yacht in the world with a full-sized indoor padel court. Twenty metres by ten, ceilings over six metres high, arena-level lighting. A court that its designer described, with characteristic British understatement, as “probably the best padel court in the world.” The owner begged to differ: it was certainly the best.
There is something perfectly logical about all of this. Anyone who knows the world of yachting understands that a boat is never just a boat, it is an extension of one’s life, a perimeter in which the world operates according to one’s own rules. Lewis had no intention of giving up his daily padel routine every time he cast off. The solution was not to change the routine. It was to bring the court along.

The market followed, as it always does with the right ideas. Today there are modular padel courts designed specifically for superyachts: carbon frames, plexiglass and mesh panels, deployable on the bow or helideck without permanent modifications to the deck. Around 250,000 dollars. An optional, in context.
But the real story is not technological. It is cultural. Padel has travelled a path that few sports manage: it has entered the places where things are decided, built, lived. First city clubs. Then yacht decks. Not because anyone planned this trajectory, but because the people who play it simply kept bringing it with them, wherever they went.

Il cantiere impiegò trentatré mesi. Il risultato fu Aviva: 98 metri, varata nel 2017, prima yacht al mondo con un campo da padel indoor di dimensioni regolamentari. Venti metri per dieci, soffitti a oltre sei metri, illuminazione da arena. Un campo che il suo progettista definì, con fair understatement britannico, “probabilmente il miglior campo da padel del mondo”. L’armatore era di tutt’altro avviso: era certamente il migliore.
C’è qualcosa di perfettamente logico, in tutto questo. Chi conosce il mondo dello yachting sa che la barca non è mai solo una barca, è un’estensione della propria vita, un perimetro in cui il mondo funziona secondo le proprie regole. Lewis non voleva rinunciare alla sua routine quotidiana di padel ogni volta che salpava. La soluzione non era cambiare routine. Era portarsi il campo.

Il mercato ha seguito, come sempre fa con le idee giuste. Oggi esistono campi da padel modulari progettati specificamente per superyacht: struttura in carbonio, pannelli in plexiglass, montabili su prua o eliporto senza modifiche permanenti al ponte. Circa 250.000 dollari. Un optional, nel contesto.
Ma la storia vera non è tecnologica. È culturale. Il padel ha percorso una strada che pochi sport riescono a fare: è entrato nei luoghi in cui si decide, si costruisce, si vive. Prima i club di città. Poi le terrazze degli hotel. Ora i ponti degli yacht. Non perché qualcuno abbia pianificato questa traiettoria ma perché chi lo gioca ha semplicemente continuato a portarselo dietro, ovunque andasse.
